TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Iga Swiatek (7) meets Su-Wei Hsieh in the Round of 128 on Monday, June 28th 2021.
Will 66th ranked Su-Wei Hsieh manage to cause the upset on grand slam champion and tennis sensation Iga Swiatek? Will Iga Swiatek maintain her solid form and get her campaign here at Wimbledon under way with an easy win? We know how good Iga Swiatek is on the dirt, and this match will be a great test for her level on the grass. Can she move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships?
Su-Wei Hsieh is an experienced player on the WTA tour, although not too much in the spotlight anymore, she has had success before, achieving a career high ranking of 23 on the WTA Tour. However, she is currently at the 66th spot, and has been struggling for years, not being able to make it to a second round match in the singles main draw since April. She has the tough task of facing Iga Swiatek, who has been a force on the WTA Tour. Even if she plays tennis better than her best tennis, I have doubts she can push Iga Swiatek very much.
Iga Swiatek has been in great form, winning her maiden grand slam title, the 2020 French Open last year. With another solid run at the French Open, and a couple practice matches at the Eastbourne Open under her belt, she is the clear and very heavy favorite to move onto the Round of 64. If Su-Wei Hsieh manages to pull off the upset, it would be one of the biggest wins of her career, and it would very likely showcase a display of extremely aggressive tennis, which is often what’s needed to cause an upset on the grass.
Iga Swiatek and Su-Wei Hsieh have met one time before, with Iga Swiatek leading the head to head 1-0. Iga prevailed in their only head to head meeting with a straightforward win, 6-1 6-4. I suspect it will be no different, with Swiatek getting a good start to her run at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships with an easy win.
