Guido Pella, when at his best, is hard to beat and can compete with some of the biggest names in the game. However, we have not seen this level of play in a long time. Guido Pella is going to have to raise his level drastically now as he has been handed a tough side of the draw at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, as he meets the very in form Italian, Matteo Berrettini right from the get go.
Matteo Berrettini had a very strong start to his 2021 grass court season, winning his biggest title at the Queen’s Open. With his performances in that tournament, Matteo put himself in a strong position to be a dark horse here at Wimbledon and perhaps make his way very far instead of other big names like Zverev. Matteo Berrettini is a very tough player with a big serve and forehand. His only weaknesses are his second serve and his backhand. However, if he is able to master the backhand slice, on grass, he will find a lot of success. Can he show us some of this against Guido Pella?
Matteo Berrettini and Guido Pella have never met before, with this being their first encounter. If this was 2019, I would have expected a tighter match, but Matteo and Guido have been on opposite ends of the spectrum this year. Guido has gone 3-11 in his matches this year, whilst Matteo has gone 26-6. Matteo’s power, speed of shot, and ability to dictate points will allow him to get on top of this match right from the start and get an easy win under his belt to make his way to the Round of 64 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
