TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Alexander Zverev (3) faces Casper Ruud (8) in the Quarter-Finals on Friday August 20th, 2021.
Third seeded Alexander Zverev is in search of his second ATP-1000 title and along with Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvdev is a favorite to win the tournament. The German has been having a strong season so far and will have his eyes firmly set on the US Open. Can he get the win over Casper Ruud and advance to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open?
Alexander Zverev is currently ranked #5 in the ATP world rankings and is the third seed here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open. The tall German has been having a solid season so far in 2021 and will be looking to replicate and surpass last year’s event where he lost in the Final to Dominic Thiem. This is his first event back on the Tour since Wimbledon, and he has started confidently here, defeating Lloyd Harris and Guido Pella in straight sets. Zverev is very much a confidence based player, and he can be extremely dangerous when he’s locked in. The reigning Olympic gold medalist is the favorite here against Casper Ruud, but this is shaping up to be an extremely tough match at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Casper Ruud is the eighth seed here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open and is currently ranked #11 in the ATP world rankings. The twenty two year old Norwegian has been enjoying career year this season, notably winning four titles (including three in a row) and reaching two consecutive Masters-1000 Semi-Finals. He has really improved over the past few seasons and it is only a matter of time before he breaks into the top 10. After a very tough three set win over Reilly Opelka in his opening match he cruised past Diego Schwartzman in straights to set up this clash with Alexander Zverev. While he is the underdog here, Ruud’s aggressive baseline game make him a difficult opponent on any surface and he should not be discounted here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Surprisingly, this will be the first time that the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour. Both men have been in fine form all season and seem in good nick here, so it is shaping up to be a very interesting match. After considering everything, I am going to pick Alexander Zverev to win the match. He simply has an extra gear that his opponent does not have, and Casper Ruud is likely to struggle with the German’s powerful baseline game. Ruud is one of the best fighters on tour so he should never be fully discounted, but Zverev looks like a safe bet to get the win, advancing to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
