Cristian Garin has his eyes firmly set on his second title of the year, and sixth ATP Tour title overall. The Chilean has established himself as one of the finest clay-court players in the world, and along with top seeded Casper Ruud is the main contender for the title here at the 2021 Swedish Open in Bastad. Next up in his path is the unseeded Argentine Federico Coria, who has been very impressive thus far. Can he cause the massive upset and advance to his first ATP Semi-Final of the year?
Cristian Garin is currently ranked #18 on the ATP Tour, and is the second seed here at the 2021 Swedish Open. The Big Chilean has built a reputation as one of the top clay courters in the world, and has dominated the lower level ATP tournaments on this surface. He will be hoping for a strong performance here in Bastad as he gears up for the second half of the season. His heavy topspin forehand and flatter backhand are massive weapons on this surface, and his serve has been rapidly improving. Garin comfortably defeated Pedro Martinez in the Round of 16 to set up this clash with Federico Coria, and enters this match as the massive favorite to advance here.
Federico Coria is unseeded here at the 2021 Swedish Open, and is ranked #77 on the ATP Tour. The Argentine has quietly been putting together a career-best season in 2021, and has seen his ranking climb recently. He is a very solid baseliner with a big forehand, and is very consistent on both sides. The only thing that he is lacking is a big weapon which may be necessary to hit through his opponent Cristian Garin, who should have no problems absorbing whatever the Argentine throws at him. Coria has been very impressive so far here in Bastad, most notably defeating Marco Cecchinato in the Round of 16 to set up this clash. It was very impressive how he was able to keep his focus and intensity after losing the first set, and he will be confident heading into this match, despite being the big underdog.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Cristian Garin leading the head to head 1-0. They met last year in Rio de Janeiro with the Chilean winning a tough three setter. I expect him to win again, but it should be a lot more comfortable this time. Federico Coria is a very solid player who has been improving lately, but he is no match for Garin, who is simply better in all areas of the game and has too much firepower for the Argentine to handle for a long period. I expect a comfortable straight-sets win for Garin who will move on to the Final here at the 2021 Swedish Open.
