TennisSection previews the 2021 Munich Open as Casper Ruud (2) meets John Millman (8) in the Quarter-Finals on Friday April 30th, 2021.
This is set to be an interesting Quarter-Final encounter between Casper Ruud and John Millman here at the 2021 Munich Open. It is a classic match between youth and experience, with the Norwegian being one of the most promising youngsters on the ATP Tour, and Millman being a seasoned veteran. Ruud is heavily favored to win this match due to his clay court pedigree, but the Aussie is one of the hardest workers on tour and should not be discounted. Can he cause the upset here and advance to the Semi-Finals here at Ruud’s expense?
Casper Ruud is currently ranked a career-high #24 in the ATP world rankings, and is the second seed here at the 2021 Munich Open. After struggling with injuries to begin the year, he is currently in red-hot form on this surface. After reaching the Quarter-Finals in Andalucia in his return to the tour, he impressively made it to the Semi-Finals at the Monte-Carlo Masters, losing to Andrey Rublev. Ruud is considered one of the best young players in the world, especially on clay and is a serious contender for the title here in Bavaria. With his elite movement and heavy groundstrokes on both sides, he is extremely tough to beat and enters this match as the overwhelming favorite against John Millman. The Norwegian was very impressive in his opening win over the veteran Pablo Cuevas and is playing at a very high level at the moment.
John Millman is ranked #40 in the world and is seeded eighth here at the 2021 Munich Open. Known as one of the hardest workers on tour, he is a very gritty fighter than is dangerous on any surface because of his attitude and mental strength. While he is much better known for his hard court success, he is still a capable player on clay as evidenced by his hard fought three set win over countryman Alexei Popyrin in the First Round. He was then given a lifeline in the Round of 16 when his opponent Guido Pella retired due to injury after being a set up. Millman will be eager to take advantage of his good fortune, but is up against a very tough opponent in Casper Ruud who is in incredible form. The Australian is the heavy underdog but is the type of player that can never be counted out as he will give little away and fight for every point. If Ruud is not at his best, Millman will be ready to take advantage.
Somewhat surprisingly, this will be the first encounter between the two players on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This will be a very entertaining match, and should be filled with long rallies. As stated earlier, Casper Ruud is the more accomplished player on this surface and should be able to dominate the match from the baseline. However, John Millman won’t go away easily, and will fight his hardest for every point. If the Norwegian isn’t at his best and is making numerous unforced errors, there may be a window for Millman to step in and make this a very close contest. However, it is very difficult to go against Ruud’s current form, and he should win this match. Three sets is a distinct possibility, but I expect Ruud to win in two very tight sets here, and advance to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Munich Open.
