TennisSection previews the 2021 Mallorca Open as Daniil Medvedev (1) meets Sam Querrey in the Final on Saturday June 26th, 2021.
Top seed Daniil Medvedev will face American Sam Querrey in the Final of the 2021 Mallorca Open. Both men have played some outstanding tennis this week and fully deserve to be here. The big Russian is seeking his first grass-court title as he concludes his Wimbledon preparations, and in this type of form will is considered one of the main contenders for the title there. Can the big-serving American stop him by causing the big upset?
Daniil Medvedev is currently ranked #2 on the ATP Tour and is the number one seed here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. He has never had much success on the grass throughout his career but has seemingly found form at the right time, just before Wimbledon. Medvedev has really improved a lot over the past few years and is now a major threat for most of the major titles, with Wimbledon no exception. He has played exceptionally well here in Mallorca, using his big serve and powerful flat groundstrokes to great effect. The Russian was a bit too casual in the first set against Pablo Carreno Busta, and likely won’t get away with that with his next opponent Sam Querry, who has had fantastic results over the years on this surface. Medvedev should be favored to win this match, but it won’t be as comfortable as the rankings suggest.
Sam Querrey is unseeded here at the 2021 Mallorca Open, and is ranked #60 in the ATP world rankings. The American has been in mixed form over the last few years, and has seen his ranking plummet from a career high #11 on the ATP Tour. Despite his poor recent form, he has been impressive so far this grass court season, reaching the Semis in Stuttgart. The big serving American is a former Wimbledon Semi-Finalist and Queen’s champion, and is a much better grass court player than his ranking suggests. Other than an opening round struggle, he has been dominant here in Mallorca, and has been overpowering opponents with his massive serve. While he is the underdog here against Daniil Medvedev, his strong grass-court pedigree should make this a lot closer than many would expect.
This will be the second meeting between the two players, with Medvedev leading the head to head by 1-0. The Russian won their only previous encounter back in 2017 at Eastbourne on grass, which coincidentally was the year that Sam Querrey reached the Wimbledon Semis. Since then, their careers have gone in different paths, with the Russian rising to the top of the charts and Querrey declining. Despite this, I think that this will be a very close match, and three sets is very likely. I am going against the grain here, and picking Sam Querrey to cause the huge upset. This may seem like a strange pick but he has been serving extremely well, and I believe that Medvedev will take is foot off the gas a bit as he conserves energy for a run at Wimbledon. Both men are certainly capable of winning but I am going with the American to win his first title since 2017, and claiming the 2021 Mallorca Open title.
