Belgrade Open 2021: Novak Djokovic vs. Federico Coria Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Belgrade Open as Novak Djokovic (1) meets Federico Coria in the Quarter-Finals on Thursday May 27th, 2021.

Can the unseeded Argentine Federico Coria cause the massive upset here at the 2021 Belgrade Open? Or will world number one Novak Djokovic claim yet another title here at home as he continues his preparations for Roland Garros? The Serbian star seems to be peaking at the right time as he attempts to dethrone Rafael Nadal at the French Open, can be he stopped here?

Novak Djokovic is the world number one, and is seeded #1 here at the 2021 Belgrade Open. The Serbian star has struggled with injury and loss of form this season, but is seemingly rounding into form at the moment. Somewhat surprisingly, he only has claimed one title so far this season, at the Australian Open, and will be expecting to win the title here, and ideal preparation for the French Open. Despite his indifferent form this season, Djokovic is still the main threat to Rafa Nadal’s throne and is the heavy favorite to win here in Belgrade. He was tested in the Round of 16 by Mats Moraing and knows he will have to do better against a tougher opponent here in Federico Coria.

Federico Coria is currently ranked #96 in the ATP world rankings, and is unseeded. After struggling in the First Round against Marko Topo, he rebounded well to defeat the veteran Pablo Cuevas in convincing fashion, 6-3, 6-2. He won over 75% of his first serve points, and was able to break Cuevas five times in a very solid performance. The brother of former ATP star Guillermo Coria has been largely disappointing season, struggling since reaching the Semi-Finals in Cordoba. He improves to 8-9 on the year with his two victories here, but his run is likely going to come to an end here against top seeded Novak Djokovic. Coria will have to be at his very best if he is to make this match even remotely competitive at the 2021 Belgrade Open.

This will be the first time that the two players will be facing each other on the ATP Tour, and their head to head stands at 0-0. This is a very straightforward match to call, and will end up being a straight-sets win for Novak Djokovic. He is peaking at the right time just before Roland Garros, and certainly has a chip on his shoulder after a disappointing season so far. While Federio Coria is a solid player on this surface, he has been in poor form of late and does not have the required firepower to trouble the world number one. I expect Djokovic to dominate this match from start to finish, advancing to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Belgrade Open.
