Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently ranked a career-high #5 in the ATP world rankings and is coming off his first Masters-1000 win in Monte-Carlo. The Greek star has established himself as one of the best players in the world this year, and currently leads the FedEx Race to Turin rankings. He has matured greatly as a player in the past year and finally seems ready to challenge the very best players at the Majors. After his win in Monte-Carlo his confidence will be at an all-time high and he enters this match against Benoit Paire as the overwhelming favorite. He can dominate players with his big serve and heavy groundstrokes, and the fast court conditions here at the 2021 Madrid Open go well with his game. It would be nothing less than a shock if he were to lose here.
Benoit Paire is currently ranked #35 in the world rankings, and to say that he has had a poor year would be an understatement. The Frenchman is undoubtedly talented, but has been in the press a lot lately for poor behavior and lack of effort rather than his tennis. Prior to this tournament, he had lost six matches in a row, and not much was expected of him here. However, he produced a shock when he defeated Munich Open winner Nikolosz Basilashvili in the First Round, in an impressive display of tennis. He seemed highly motivated and one can only hope that his recent troubles are behind him and he is back to his best. Unfortunately for him, he will face possibly the most in-form player in the world in Stefanos Tsitsipas, and is not expected to go any further here at the 2021 Madrid Open.
This will be the fourth time that the two players are facing each other on the ATP Tour, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 2-1. While Benoit Paire has a win over the Greek star, it was almost 5 years ago and Tsitsipas has come a long way since then. This match will seemingly have only one outcome, and that is a straight-sets win for the fourth seed. He is currently in dominant form, and while Paire looked good in his First Round win he is no match for his opponent. Expect yet another impressive performance from Stefanos Tsistipas as he advances to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Madrid Open.
