US Open 2022: Daniil Medvedev vs. Nick Kyrgios Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 US Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Nick Kyrgios in the Round of 16 on Sunday, September 4th, 2022.

Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Nick Kyrgios pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where the world’s number one takes on one of the hottest players on the ATP in a rematch from several weeks back. Who will triumph and move through to the quarterfinals at the 2022 US Open?

Daniil Medvedev has been pretty clinical so far, not dropping a set in his opening 3 matches. Wu played some really solid tennis in the beginning, but Medvedev was firm and was looking better on serve as he set up a fiery meeting with Nick Kyrgios in the Round of 16. It’s tough to call a favorite for this one, and while by results it’s obviously Medvedev, Kyrgios really is able to give him in specific a hard time with his massive serve and especially with how well he can utilize his net skills. Let’s see if the No. 1 can keep his ranking and move through to the quarterfinals as he aims to defend his title at the 2022 US Open.

Nick Kyrgios played a flawless match vs Wolf, serving incredibly well, not giving the American anything. In order to take down Daniil Medvedev, he’ll have to be even better. Medvedev will love these conditions though, and if he serves well, I can’t see Kyrgios getting out of this. The best of 5 will also favor the defending champion, and I definitely favor him the longer the match goes on. Kyrgios’ play will obviously revolve around serving and volleying and in general mixing it up with some drop shots, but Medvedev will likely be keen on that and try his best to take down the Aussie with his aggressive baseline play. Let’s see what these two will bring to Ashe here at the 2022 US Open.

Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios have met 4 times before, with Nick Kyrgios leading the head to head 3-1. Their first couple of meetings came a little earlier, when Nick was already among the best and Medvedev wasn’t quite there yet, but obviously Nick knows how to play him. Their most recent meetings this year were very intriguing though. Daniil got him in 4 in Australia in an amazing match, while Kyrgios took him down in Montreal in 3 just a few weeks ago. That court was a little slower, but it’s not like Kyrgios won’t prefer a faster court as well. While the exchanges in this match will be very fascinating, I expect Medvedev to step it up and show why he’s the man here in New York and just edge out Nick Kyrgios in this mouth watering contest here at the 2022 US Open.
