TennisSection previews the 2021 Acapulco Open as Milos Raonic (4) meets Tommy Paul in the First Round on Tuesday March 16th, 2021.
Both players have started the season solidly, but will be keen to improve their current form. Will it be the veteran Canadian Milos Raonic getting the win here? Or can the unseeded American Tommy Paul cause the upset and advance here at the 2021 Acapulco Open in Mexico? These two players are at home on theses hard courts and are always up for a challenge. Who will come out on top and advance to the Round of 16?
Milos Raonic is one of the most successful players currently on the ATP Tour, having been ranked inside the top 20 for many years. Now ranked #15, he seems as motivated as ever and will be targeting a return to the top 10. He has only played two tournaments for the year, the ATP Cup and the Australian Open with solid but unspectacular results. Raonic is very comfortable on hard courts as they suit his game style very well, with his huge serve and groundstrokes allowing him to dominate opponents. The Canadian was in great form at the Australian Open before losing to world number one Novak Djokovic in four close sets in the Fourth Round. He will be looking to capitalize on that momentum that he built with a deep run here at the 2021 Acapulco Open where he is one of the favorites to lift the title.
Tommy Paul is currently ranked a career high #51 and has also had a decent 2021 season so far. The twenty-three year old American started the year poorly with early round exits in Melbourne and the Australian Open, before finding form in Rotterdam. He reached the Quarter-Finals there, with some big results over higher-ranked opponents Lorenzo Sonego and Alexander Bublik. He has built some serious momentum there and is playing with a lot of confidence as usual. While he enters this match as the underdog, he will be backing himself here. Once he can return well and get a break or two, he will be in with a chance.
This will be the first meeting between the two players, and has the potential to be a First Round blockbuster. Milos Raonic is the favorite on paper and should always be backed on hard courts, but Tommy Paul is coming off a fantastic week in Rotterdam and should not be discounted. The young American also has a big serve and offensive game like Raonic, and will have more match fitness than his opponent who has not played since the Australian Open. Given that Paul is more match ready I expect this match to be very close and three sets is a strong possibility. However, I am going with Milos Raonic to get the win here. He may start slowly, but with his immense experience will figure it eventually and should grind out a tough win. Milos Raonic to win and advance to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Acapulco Open.
