TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Diego Schwartzman takes on Benoit Paire in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 11th, 2021.
Will Benoit Paire back up his great win? Will Diego Schwartzman show why he’s one of the top players in the world? This match will be an interesting one, where we have two very different players going head to head. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Toronto Open?
Benoit Paire got a great win over Mackenzie McDonald, which was rather surprising considering his results as of late and that of McDonald just last week. His service numbers were alright today, however will have to be better against Diego Schwartzman who has some of the best returning numbers in tennis history. He only served at 51% today, and if he gives Diego that many openings, he will absolutely take them. Toronto plays rather slow compared to other hard courts, which is something Diego loves and will surely take advantage of, with his grindy style of play which allows him to push his opponents further and further until they either make an error or provide an opening for Schwartzman to close. Paire has one of the best attacking backhands on tour, if not the best, and he’ll want to play that a lot up the line to avoid hitting too many forehands, as Diego will surely do the same if Benoit decides to go cross court with Schwartzman. He’ll want to avoid those exchanges as much as possible as he’ll very likely lose if he does.
Diego Schwartzman has had a pretty decent year despite just dropping out of the top 10 about a month ago. At only 5’7, his results are incredibly impressive, and he does it all with consistent heavy balls, which eventually allow him to take over the point. I like to think of him as a smaller Novak Djokovic sometimes. His serve is probably the worst on the ATP Tour, and that’s of course because of his height, however, he makes up for it with his great groundstrokes and fantastic returning numbers that he’s displayed throughout his career as mentioned before. Benoit Paire is a loose cannon, and Shwartzman matches up well against Benoit, so he’ll likely take advantage of many second serves, and will be able to consistently put pressure on Paire by targeting his forehand then putting him away, if he does this I love his chances to go through to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Benoit Paire and Diego Schwartzman have met three times before, with Diego Schwartzman leading the head to head 2-1. Their most recent meeting and the only one that would really reveal anything came at this year’s Wimbledon, where we saw Diego completely destroy Paire despite it being by far his worst surface. Diego played a good match, and despite Paire’s poor play also being a part of that, Schwartzman should feel pretty confident going into this one, as he knows how to play him and should know what to do. I expect him to use his groundstrokes to the best of his ability and outplay Paire from the back of the court to move through to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Toronto Open.
