TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Diego Schwartzman takes on Botic van de Zandschulp in the Round of 16 on Sunday, September 5th, 2021.
Will Diego Schwartzman go through? Will Botic van de Zandschulp pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have Schwartzman who is playing some good tennis with a great chance to make the quarterfinals of a slam yet again. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 US Open?
Diego Schwartzman has been playing pretty well lately, making it into the fourth round easily. Despite that, his draw was pretty easy, and he hasn’t had any real tests leading up to this point. That includes this match right here, with a rather unknown player in Botic van de Zandschulp. I suspect it will be a similar story as it was in the last 3 matches of Diego, with him easily winning in straight sets and moving on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 US Open. Schwartzman will just have to focus on playing his normal game, which is consistent ball striking up the middle of the court, then move his opponent around as soon as he gets a good ball, and then finally finishing the point if his opponent doesn’t make an error.
Botic van de Zandschulp is at a career-best result at a grand slam, reaching the fourth round to set up this meeting with eleventh seed Diego Schwartzman. He upset Casper Ruud in the second round, taking him out in four sets. Granted, he didn’t have to play any incredible tennis to do it, as Ruud was a little flat on the day. Still, though, Zandschulp showed great mental resolve and consistency, to win another match and move through to the next round. To do it again though, would be an incredible accomplishment, as Schwartzman is playing at a high level, and has all the experience to back it up. I don’t think Zandschulp has much of a chance to push Schwartzman, but let’s see if he can put up a fight as he plays for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 US Open.
Diego Schwartzman and Botic van de Zandschulp have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Unsurprisingly, they’ve never met before, with Zandschulp playing many challengers to stay afloat, ranked at 117 in the world. After this though, he will get some good points and break the top 100. It’s not too interesting of a match-up, with Schwartzman just playing at a much higher level, and frankly with this easy draw, he will likely win in an easy straight sets and be fresh to give us a great quarterfinal match, let’s see if Schwartzman can handle the amazing opportunity he has here and grab the win to progress here at the 2021 US Open.
