TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Diego Schwartzman (9) meets Benoit Paire in the First Round on Monday June 28th, 2021.
Ninth seeded Argentinian Diego Schwartzman will face the unpredictable Frenchman Benoit Paire in the First Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. This is a match between two players of contrasting personalities and styles, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. The Argentine Schwartzman has built a reputation of being one of the most well-liked and well behaved players on the ATP Tour, and is an extremely consistent performer. On the other hand, the Frenchman is as volatile as they come, throwing temper tantrums and “tanking” matches. However, his talent cannot be denied. Who will get the win here and advance to the Second Round?
Diego Schwartzman is currently ranked #11 on the ATP Tour and is the ninth seed at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The Argentine has been in outstanding form over the past couple years, breaking into the top 10 of the rankings for the first time. Normally one of the most consistent performers on the tour, Schwartzman now finds himself on his least favorite surface, and one that he has struggled on over his career. Due to his small stature and relatively weak serve, he struggles to compete with the more powerful players as he doesn’t have much time to get behind the ball and employ his regular game. He is not expected to get very far here at Wimbledon, but has a chance to win his opening match against the unpredictable Benoit Paire.
Benoit Paire is currently ranked #46 in the ATP world rankings and is unseeded at this year’s Wimbledon Championships. The Frenchman has been ranked in the top 20 in the past, but has been on a shockingly poor run since the pandemic started. He has had numerous behavioral and attitude issues and has been accused of “tanking” matches with his behavior leading to him being dismissed from the French Olympic team. Like his opponent Diego Schwartzman, grass is his least favorite surface and that coupled with his usually poor effort suggest that his stay at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships will be a short one. Paire has only won two matches this year, and I do not expect that he will add many more to that tally.
This will be the third meeting between the two players, with the head to head record standing at 1-1. Like all matches involving Benoit Paire, you never know what to expect. The Frenchman is extremely talented, but his poor record and attitude this year do not look like they will improve anytime soon. While Diego Schwartzman is not comfortable on this surface at all, he should still be able to defeat his opponent here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, as Paire doesn’t have the patience to deal with the Argentine’s consistent game. I expect Schwartzman to get the win in three or four sets, advancing to the Second Round here at the All-England Club.
