TennisSection previews the 2023 Lyon Open as Caroline Garcia takes on Camila Osorio in the semifinal on Friday, February 4, 2023.
Caroline Garcia remains on course to become the first home champion at the Lyon Open. But the Frenchwoman has not had a smooth week. Could she come unstuck against the surprise semifinalist Camila Osorio?
Caroline Garcia improved on her recent excellent form on indoor hard courts as she toppled Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 7-5 7-5 to reach her second successive semifinal at the Lyon Open. Garcia, who exited the Australian Open in the fourth round, is looking to make up for that disappointment this week. So far, it’s not been smooth sailing for the 29-year-old top seed who was taken the distance by Alison Van Uytvanck in the second round and needed her steely resolve to break Paolini twice towards the end of each set.
Camila Osorio, meanwhile, continues to conjure one surprise after another at the Lyon Open. The Colombian star had only two Tour-level victories on indoor hard courts before this week. But that hasn’t been a limiting factor for Osorio who has scored three odds-defying wins. Another one over the top seed Caroline Garcia will surely top the lot. Could Osorio pull off the unthinkable?
Caroline Garcia and Camila Osorio have not played each other on the WTA Tour. Saturday’s semifinal match at the Lyon Open will be their first official meeting. Osorio is unfazed by power-hitting players. She’s got an upside to her game, mixing up slices and drop shots to disrupt her opponent’s rhythm and general feel for the ball. However, that is unlikely to work perfectly against Garcia who is a multidimensional baseliner herself. Add the incentive of becoming the first home champion at this tournament, you would really have to fancy Garcia to end Osorio’s remarkable run.
