TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Roger Federer (8) meets Dominik Koepfer in the Round of 32 on Saturday, June 5th 2021.
Will Dominik Koepfer get the biggest win of his career under his belt as he looks to beat one of the greatest of all time? Will Roger Federer continue to improve his game after a very strong performance in the Round of 64 which saw him show us a lot of the Federer of old? It will be good to see how Federer continues to improve, and to see if he can prevent himself from having a tight match in the Round of 32 of Roland Garros.
Dominik Koepfer caused an upset in the Round of 64, beating the in form American, Taylor Fritz, in 4 sets 6-3/6-2/3-6/6-4. Dominik Koepfer has been a dark horse in the early rounds of tournaments over the last year, impressing many times against the likes of Novak Djokovic on clay in 2020. However, since then, he has been in a bit of a slump. This win will definitely give him the necessary boost in confidence that his power and determination cause cause upsets against bigger named and higher ranked opponents. Will Dominik now be able to cause a huge upset by beating Roger Federer who has shown some strong tennis this week at the 2021 French Open?
Roger Federer was superb in his Round of 64 match against Marin Cilic, beating the Croat in 4 sets 6-2/2-6/7-6/6-2. The first two sets were identical in terms of both players dominating, however, in the third and fourth set, Roger Federer was able to get on top of the majority of the points and dictate the speed of the match. Marin was trying his best to get the match going his way, and I am sure that if he was better on his second serve, we could have seen a 5th set. But at the end of the day, even with a lot of time off and injury issues, Roger is still Roger. Will he now be able to cruise through Dominik Koepfer to make his way to the Round of 16 at Roland Garros?
Roger Federer and Dominik Koepfer have never met before, with this being their first encounter. Although Dominik has been in great form here at the 2021 French Open, he is still nowhere near the level required to get anything going against Roger Federer. Roger Federer has been in strong form this week, much better than we all expected, and I see him only improving on his performances. At 39-years-old, Roger will be ready to get a quick win under his belt to save some energy for more important matches. Therefore, I see Federer getting this win under his belt in straight sets to make his way to the Round of 16 of Roland Garros.
