The Quarter-Finals are upon us here at the 2021 Miami Open. Canadian superstar Bianca Andreescu will face Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in what is set to be an entertaining match between two young and exciting players. They have contrasting styles, with Andreescu being an extremely aggressive baseline player with huge amounts of power, and Sorribes Tormo with her counter-punching style and “never say die” attitude. Will it be Bianca Andreescu reaching her first Semi-Final since her return to the tour, or can the young Spaniard cause the stunning upset?
Bianca Andreescu missed the entire 2020 season due to some horrific knee injuries and is slowly rounding back into form. She has been rusty since her return as expected, but has shown flashes of her former dominant self. The former US Open champion is seemingly back to her best with some stunning performances thus far here at the 2021 Miami Open, and in current form has to be considered a contender for the title. She stunned Garbine Muguruza in a three set thriller in the Round of 16, and her confidence will be sky-high. On a good day, she has the power to dominate any opponent, and enters this match as the strong favorite. It remains to be seen how her fitness is holding up with this deep run but once fit she should be able to advance here over Sara Sorribes Tormo.
Sara Sorribes Tormo is currently ranked a career-high #57 on the WTA world rankings and has enjoyed a strong season thus far in 2021. The winner of the title in Guadalajara, she has showed tremendous grit here at the 2021 Miami Open, with four consecutive three set wins. Her win over Ons Jabeur in the Round of 16 was particularly impressive, as the Tunisian’s game is very unsettling and takes tremendous focus to overcome. While she enters this match as the underdog, she has a huge fighting spirit and will not back down from this challenge. She knows that Bianca Andreescu may be feeling the effects of her long Round of 16 match, and is poised to take full advantage.
The two players have never faced each other before on the WTA Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This is sure to be a very exciting match, and it is one that is difficult to call. Normally Bianca Andreescu would be the overwhelming favorite to win here, but serious questions remain about her fitness, and her opponent is in the form of her life. Sara Sorribes Tormo has been excellent in 2021 and is carrying some serious momentum into this match as she seeks to reach her first Semi-Final at this level. I expect yet another three setter, and I am going with the Canadian to get the win here. She simply has an extra gear that the Spaniard simply doesn’t, and if she is fit then she will advance here. Bianca Andreescu will get the win here and reach the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Miami Open.
