TennisSection previews the 2022 Pune Open as Elias Ymer meets Joao Sousa in the Semi-Finals on Saturday February 5th, 2022.
A surprising matchup awaits us at the 2022 Pune Open as the unseeded pair of Elias Ymer and Joao Sousa do battle for a spot in Sunday’s Final. Both men have been outstanding so far this week and have defeated higher ranked opponents to reach their first Semi-Final of the year. Who will get the win and advance to the Final?
Elias Ymer is in possibly the best form of his life, and fully deserves to be in his first ever ATP Semi-Final. The young Swede was once ranked as high as #105 but now finds himself outside of the top 150, so this result will be a welcome one. He stunned top seeded Aslan Karatsev in the Second Round after coming through the Qualifying Rounds, and has continued the momentum ever since. He defeated the experienced Stefano Travaglia in straight sets in the Quarter-Final, showing maturity to get through a very close match. Even though he is ranked lower than his opponent Joao Sousa he will be liking his chances given his form, and will be hoping to reach the Final here at the 2022 Pune Open.
Joao Sousa is ranked #137 on the ATP Tour and like his opponent Elias Ymer is in the best form that he has been in a while. The Portuguese veteran came through a couple of tough matches in the first coupe of rounds before stopping fifth seeded Daniel Altmaier in the Altmaier in straight sets in the Quarter-Final. He is very composed on the court, and even though he is more of a clay court specialist, he can be very dangerous on this surface given his consistency and experience. He has not been in a Final in a while, and he will be hoping to get the better of Elias Ymer, and move on here at the 2022 Pune Open.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Joao Sousa leading the head to head 3-0. Both men have played fantastic tennis this week, and it is difficult to choose between them. However, Elias Ymer has been just a little bit more impressive, especially with his huge win over Karatsev early on. His confidence is sky-high, and I think that he will continue riding the wave of the momentum here, and will register his first win over his opponent. It will be very close and go either way, but we are backing the young Swede to win here, advancing to the Final of the 2022 Pune Open.
