Miami Open 2023: Petra Kvitova vs Sorana Cirstea Prediction, Odds & Pick

TennisSection previews the 2023 Miami Open semifinal match featuring Petra Kvitova vs Sorana Cirstea on Friday, March 31, 2023.

Petra Kvitova vs Sorana Cirstea Match Preview

The Miami Open has thrown up one of the most unexpected semifinal matchups this fortnight. 15th seed Petra Kvitova will battle the surprise package of the tournament Sorana Cirstea on Friday. Who will prevail and reach the Miami final?

Petra Kvitova survived a bruising three-setter against big-hitting Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova to reach the semifinal of the Miami Open for the first time in her career. It marked the first time Kvitova was able to solve the Sunshine Swing quarterfinal puzzle, having fallen at the quarterfinal stage a combined five times in Indian Wells and Miami. The rain had washed off almost the whole schedule on Wednesday, leaving Kvitova and Alexandrova having to wait for over 24 hours to get to the court. Kvitova took two of her nine break-point opportunities and won 75% first-serve points. She’ll now take on the surprise package of the tournament in Sorana Cirstea.

Sorana Cirstea knocked off World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in possibly the biggest shock of the 2023 Miami Open. The Belarusian was apparently carrying a hamstring injury (evident that now she has pulled out at the Charleston event next week). But take nothing away from Cirstea who turns 33 next week. She is playing like a younger version of herself – fearless, powerful, and extremely clinical. That Sabalenka win is huge ranking-wise, but it might not even be her best display considering the level of excellent performances she dropped during the Sunshine swing in March. Cirstea has become the first player ranked outside the top 50 to win nine main draw matches at the Sunshine Double in a single calendar year. Can she make it 10 when she faces Petra Kvitova?

Petra Kvitova vs Sorana Cirstea Prediction and Pick

Petra Kvitova leads Sorana Cirstea 6-4 in their head-to-head. Of significance, they have played three times in the last two seasons, and it is Cirstea who holds a 2-1 advantage, beating the Czech lefty in back-to-back Australian Opens and is 4-1 overall on hard courts. I agree with Cirstea’s assessment of her own career and performance. She’s been intermittently brilliant, although consistency has been her biggest drawback. Kvitova is Cirstea’s senior by a mere 30 days in the age bracket, and she has erased talk of a potential retirement by sitting on the verge of re-entering the top 10. It should be a gripping semifinal at the Miami Open and there is very little to separate these two. After an odds-defying fortnight, this Cirstea run is too good to end empty-handed in the semis.
