Kvitova vs Vekic Prediction
Two of the most powerful players on the women’s tour will clash for the right to be crowned Berlin champion. Petra Kvitova, one of the most decorated grass-court players of her generation, will look to clinch yet another title to her already impressive resume. Having missed 20 days of action in June nursing a foot injury, Kvitova has been phenomenal this week, beating the likes of Karolina Pliskova and Caroline Garcia with ease. But her semifinal showing over Rosmalen champion Ekaterina Alexandrova was the exclamation point that Donna Vekic will need to play the match of her life to dent her hopes of triumphing on Sunday. Kvitova did not face a single break point against the Russian, and came through that match in straight sets despite Alexandrova having fresher legs from getting a walkover on Friday (Kvitova played through two matches on Saturday after her quarterfinal was moved due to rain).
Vekic, for her part, will contest her fourth career final on grass. She’s won once and lost the other two finals. A little over a year ago she was ranked outside the world’s top 100, but she is now back in the top 20 after another odds-defying run saw her author the shock of the tournament when she upset Elena Rybakina in the round of 16. She drew lots of confidence from that win and expertly took care of both Avanesyan and Sakkari on the same day to book her spot in the final. Kvitova is the favorite here. Not only has she beaten Vekic in each of their last three meetings, but there has not been a chink in her armory this week, not even a slight drop in level. For Vekic, it’s been a different story, she’s been occasionally prone to lapses in concentration, in the second set against Avanesyan and Sakkari. Such fleeting moments of inconsistency will be punished by the powerful and combative Kvitova who doesn’t need a second look. Back the Czech to return to the winner’s podium on Sunday.
