Alcaraz vs Korda Prediction
We have an exciting semifinal clash at Queen’s as top seed Carlos Alcaraz faces Sebastian Korda. The American is the only unseeded player left in the draw. Alcaraz got here by tallying wins over Arthur Rinderknech, Jiri Lehecka, and Grigor Dimitrov. He is making his tournament debut, and although he was pushed to a deciding set in his opening match, he’s looked assured so far.
Korda, meanwhile, has played some exceptional tennis this week accounting for three high-quality wins. He defeated British one-hander Dan Evans in his opening match. And thereafter, he stopped Stuttgart champion Frances Tiafoe 7-6, 6-3, with Korda firing 15 aces and only dropping his serve once. His quarterfinal opponent Cam Norrie was put to the sword with a barrage of aces and winners. The American hasn’t dropped a set this week and even made a bold prediction that he is one of the favorites for this year’s Wimbledon. While it is never too early to make such a presumptuous statement considering the short timeframe on grass, it is pertinent to note that this is Korda’s most productive tournament since he returned from a long injury lay-off. Korda’s serve has been a real force of nature, facing just five break points in three matches (and only broken twice). But Alcaraz is one of the best returners in the game and Korda will expect to see a lot more of his first serves coming back and with interest. Alcaraz is also a more creative shot-maker and can track as many balls due to his relentless movement and athleticism and forcing Korda to take more risks. Fully expect this one to be edge-of-the-seat stuff and it would be some statement should Korda pull it off. But I’m fascinated to see if he’ll get edgy when things don’t go his way, because he hasn’t been in that spot all week. So we’ll lean towards Alcaraz.
