J.J. Wolf picked up his first main draw win on grass, in an excellent display of power tennis. He saw off Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-2, 6-4. Wolf fired nine aces in the match and won 89% first-serve points. He only faced two break points and he saved them both. And after last week’s grass-court debut at Queen’s, the American seems to have made a quick adjustment to the surface. He will face French teenager Luca Van Assche in the second round at ATP Eastbourne.

The 19-year-old qualifier defeated British wild card George Loffhagen in an absolute epic, taking close to three hours. He came back from 2-6, 3-5 down and saved a match point to prevail 2-6, 7-6, 7-6. Like Wolf, it was his first main draw win on grass. Both players will see this as a fantastic opportunity to extend their stay in the tournament and pursue a maiden quarterfinal on grass. Wolf looks like he could be the player setting the tone in this match. He’s got a cannon of a serve which is so difficult to break down. If he picks his spots as he did to near perfection against Etcheverry, I can’t see him losing here.
