Wimbledon 2022: Rafael Nadal vs. Nick Kyrgios Tennis Prediction and Pick

TennisSection previews 2022 Wimbledon as Rafael Nadal takes on Nick Kyrgios in the Semi-Finals on Friday July 8th, 2022.

A blockbuster clash awaits us here as 2022 Wimbledon as two-time champion Rafael Nadal will take on Nick Kyrgios in what is expected to be a fiery encounter. The Aussie is seeking to reach his first ever Grand Slam Final while Nadal has his sights firmly on Grand Slam title #23. Nadal is the favorite of course, but Kyrgios seems locked in and this is favorite surface, can he stun the world and defeat the second seed?

Rafael Nadal is the fourth ranked player in the world and is the second seed here at 2022 Wimbledon. The Spaniard has looked good here at Wimbledon after a somewhat shaky start, dominating his opponents with some clinical play. However, he seemed to suffer an abdominal injury in his epic five set win over Taylor Fritz, where he used every ounce of his willpower and effort to come from behind and win. It remains to be seen how severe the injury is, and how much he will have left to take on the talented Nick Kyrgios. When fully fit he would certainly be the favorite, but Kyrgios has immense firepower which is usually the recipe to defeat Rafa, and the injury is quite concerning. That being said, it would be foolish to doubt the 22 time Grand Slam champion, so it will be interesting to see how it unfolds.

Nick Kyrgios is unseeded here at 2022 Wimbledon, and has been one of the stories of the past week. The Australian superstar has long been considered an enigma on the tour, capable of defeating anyone on his day but also very prone to meltdowns which cost him many matches (and money in fines!). Other than his trademark clashes with opponents and umpires he has been in incredible form here at Wimbledon, crushing the in-form Cristian Garin in straight sets in the Quarters. His serve has been incredible on the grass so far, and if that continues, Rafael Nadal will be in for a huge surface, especially since there are question marks about his fitness. His power game is exactly what is needed to defeat the Spaniard on this quicker surface, keeping the points short and taking time away from his opponent. He is definitely the underdog given that this is uncharted territory for him, but if there was ever a time for an upset at a slam, this is it.

This will be their 10th meeting on the ATP Tour, with Rafael Nadal leading the head to head 6-3, including a 1-1 record on grass. This match will be incredibly difficult to call, and that is compounded by the uncertainty around Nadal’s injury. If we were certain that he was fully healthy, we would pick him to win this match in four or five tough sets, but there is a chance that he enters this match very limited. It will still be tight regardless, but we are going to go against the grain and pick Nick Kyrgios to win this match. His game is tailor made for this surface, and he looks primed for a run at the title here at 2022 Wimbledon. He isn’t the most reliable player out there but he always seems to bring his A-game when playing against the top players, and he loves the big stage. Rafa won’t just hand it to him, but given how he struggled to hold serve against Taylor Fritz, I am going to go with the Aussie here, especially since he won’t give Rafa many looks on his serve. Nick Kyrgios to cause the upset here in a blockbuster match, reaching his first ever Grand Slam Final. While this is the pick it may be best to avoid betting the winner market, and the game overs and each player to win a set are much safer options, as picking against Rafael Nadal is always a risky proposition.
