What a matchup we have here. It’s ninth seed Daria Kasatkina facing off against former No. 3 Elina Svitolina. Recent history suggests Svitolina should be winning this easily, but times have changed. The Ukrainian only just returned from maternity leave in April and her opponent has morphed into a top-10 player. Still, Svitolina’s comeback has been nothing short of magical. Playing her first match in a year in Charleston (lost in three sets to Putintseva), you’d never assume she was out of the game for that long, even though there were occasional moments of hunching over the baseline gasping for air. But she’s slowly and steadily managed to get that match sharpness back. Her dogged competitiveness and fight make her tough to beat in baseline gungho. So Kasatkina, in spite of having the favorite tag knows she cannot take the Ukrainian star lightly. After all, Svitolina has already bagged a title in less than two months since her return and played out of her skin in the last two matches at Roland Garros to win in three sets. We’ve seen Kasatkina go nuclear after one or two awesome wins, so instead, we’ll take the set handicap +1.5, which means Svitolina only needs to win a set here.
