TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Roberto Bautista Agut takes on Tommy Paul in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 11th, 2021.
Will Tommy Paul use the momentum and confidence gained from his very tough win against Vasek Pospisil to continue getting big wins? Will Roberto Bautista Agut be able to get a big win under his belt for his confidence even through this is not the toughest opponent, but more of the fact that Tommy Paul has been able to get a match under his belt and get acclimatised to these conditions? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Toronto Open. Who will it be?
Tommy Paul will be looking to bounce back after not having played well in at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics where he lost easily against Aslan Karatsev in the Round of 64. Tommy Paul has not been at his best in 2021 and he has not lived up to the performances he put on in 2020. However, he beat the local and crowd favourite Vasek Pospisil in the Round of 64 in 3 sets 6-7/6-2/6-3 and he will be looking to even more form here at the 2021 Toronto Open. Tommy Paul is very well suited for these hard court conditions because he has a very big power hitting game, but he needs to ensure all is at its best as he now meets the always tough and high-stamina Spaniard, Roberto Bautista Agut.
Roberto Bautista Agut is looking to bounce back after being on a 3-match losing streak and moving to a different surface than what he has played in over 3-4 months now. Roberto Bautista Agut, when at his best, is so hard to beat because he has a great power hitting game, but he is also a great mover on all surfaces, meaning he is not afraid of playing short or extremely long rallies. Roberto Bautista Agut will come out here at the 2021 Toronto Open looking to find his form and wear off the hard court rust, but I am sure he will give himself a strong chance against Tommy Paul.
Roberto Bautista Agut and Vasek Pospisil have met 2 times before, with Roberto Bautista Agut leading the head to head 2-0. They met both times this year on clay and Roberto won both matches with the exact same scoreline, 6-3/6-4. I expect a tighter match here because Tommy has already gotten one match under his belt, and Roberto will be wearing off some rust initially in the match. This means that if Tommy is to win, he will have to get the first set under his belt, because the longer the match goes, the more in favour of Roberto it swings. I expect the first set to be tight, but once Roberto wears off the rust, the Spaniard will wear the American around the court too much for him to handle. Roberto will make his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Toronto Open.
