Novak Djokovic got his Rome Masters title defense off to an excellent start as he defeated Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6, 6-2 to advance into the third round. Djokovic was tested by Etcheverry who led by a break in the fist set, and even took a 3-0 lead in the first-set tiebreak. But Djokovic found his groove and turned the set and match around to come through in straights sets. Grigor Dimitrov, meanwhile, won the battle of one handers, beating three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-6. It was a controlled display of artistry and aggression by Dimitrov who withstood a fightback in the second set before prevailing in straights too. Dimitrov has a jaw-dropping losing record against Djokovic with his solitary win in 11 meetings coming 10 years ago in Madrid. While this is as best a chance as any to beat an off-color Djokovic who is still spotting that strapping on his elbow, Dimitrov has been a prone to nerves in this matchup and often his strategy has been ineffective trying to outhit and outlast Djokovic in rallies. Unless he tweaks it here, then the outcome should be no different to their clash in Melbourne earlier this season.
