TennisSection previews the 2023 Madrid Open second-round match featuring Andrey Rublev vs. Stan Wawrinka on Friday, April 28, 2023.
Andrey Rublev vs. Stan Wawrinka Preview
Will Andrey Rublev get the win? Will Stan Wawrinka pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the 5th seed taking on the legendary Swiss in a popcorn matchup. Who will triumph and move through to the Round of 32 at the 2023 Madrid Open?
Andrey Rublev is in some great form, playing solid all year but seemingly exploding at the start of the clay season, winning Monte-Carlo and reaching the final of Banja Luka where he didn’t play his best, but it shouldn’t be too much of a cause for concern as he takes on Stan Wawrinka in his opening match at the 2023 Madrid Open. Although no one ever wants to take on Wawrinka in their opening match, Rublev comes into this the heavy favorite and should get through to the Round of 32 at the 2023 Madrid Open.
Stan Wawrinka came through a really tight match with Maxime Cressy, stating afterward that the conditions really helped his serve and that the court was playing quickly. That doesn’t really help Wawrinka here but nor will it help Rublev, both players can play at their best almost anywhere, but for Wawrinka to win he will certainly have to play at that level, otherwise Andrey Rublev will be too good and book his ticket in the third round of the 2023 Madrid Open.
Andrey Rublev vs. Stan Wawrinka Prediction and Pick
Andrey Rublev and Stan Wawrinka have met three times before, with Stan Wawrinka leading the head to head 2-1. It’s important to note that they haven’t played too often since Rublev truly ascended to the top 10 level of the game, and that the matchup, in this case, can go both ways. Obviously, Rublev is better poised to come through here but he could present similar challenges that Sinner gives Wawrinka. On the other hand, Wawrinka will enjoy the backhand exchange with Rublev, in the end though, Rublev should come through here and return to the round of 32 here at the 2023 Madrid Open.
