It’s an all-Spanish affair when wild card entrant Rebeka Masarova looks to pinch her first main draw win at WTA 1000 at the Madrid Open. But can she take down compatriot Cristina Bucsa?
Rebeka Masarova was on the doorstep of her biggest ITF title at the weekend but lost the championship match in straight sets to Danka Kovinic at the W100 Oeiras ITF. Just like in the opening week of the season where Masarova made her maiden WTA final in Auckland, a slice of bad luck met her in the final. Still, she has risen to a career-high No. 74, which is something she can smile about, and has received a main draw wild card at the Madrid Open.
Cristina Bucsa, meanwhile, has relied on a late withdrawal to get herself a main draw spot at the 2023 Madrid Open. Bucsa, like Rebeka Masarova, is also sitting at a career-high ranking of No. 70 this week. The 25-year-old is 12-8 across all levels this season, with her eye-catching result coming at this year’s Australian Open when she stunned Bianca Andreescu en route to the third round.

Rebeka Masarova leads Cristina Bucsa 1-0 in their head-to-head. That match happened five years ago and on clay, but is unlikely to be of any measuring scale here. Masarova will look to build on that momentum from Oeiras and I can’t see fatigue being an issue here as she only played one three-set match in Portugal. Bucsa regards clay as her most-preferred surface so she has the capability of causing her compatriot some trouble. But Masarova has the bigger serve which will earn her free points in these fast conditions.
