TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Aryna Sabalenka faces Leylah Fernandez in the Semi-Finals on Thursday September 9th, 2021.
A very exciting match is expected here at the 2021 US Open as second seeded Aryna Sabalenka will meet Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez for a spot in the Final. Both women have been outstanding so far here in New York and will be very eager to reach their first Major Final. Does the teenager have what it takes to cause yet another upset? Or will it be the world number two advancing to Saturday’s Final?
Aryna Sabalenka is the second seed here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #2 on the WTA Tour. The Belarusian has been playing incredible tennis this week here in New York and is the highest seed left in the tournament. After dropping the opening set in her First Round match she has not lost one since, and has simply been dominating her opponents with some huge groundstrokes. She impressively crushed French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-1, 6-4 in a stunning performance. Sabalenka hits a huge ball on both sides and once she keeps her errors low there are not many players that can keep up with her from the baseline. She has also been serving well which is an area that can sometimes keep her back, so if she keeps this up it will be very tough for the young Canadian Leylah Fernandez to stop her here, but Sabalenka will need to be careful as she tends to lose focus at times, and against the spirited teenager that could be a recipe for disaster.
Leylah Fernandez is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #73 in the world rankings. The teenage sensation has taken the tennis world by storm with some shocking performances such as her upsets of Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber and Elina Svitolina. She has always been very talented but the most impressive part of her run to the Semis has been her mature demeanor and the way that she has remained focused throughout the key moments and under pressure. The lefty is definitely the big underdog here but with the fighting spirit that she has displayed this week should not be discounted. She is playing freely and seemingly without pressure, and is exactly the type of player that can get under Sabalenka’s skin and frustrate her. If she can keep a lot of balls in play and scramble as she has done then she can keep this match competitive.
This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour and it certainly will be a fantastic match. Both women have played world class tennis so far here at the 2021 US Open and will be very eager to reach their first Grand Slam Final. Sabalenka obviously has a lot more experience but she also has been known to crumble under pressure in key moments, something that Leylah Fernandez will be keen to exploit. The Belarusian is the obvious favorite, but it is hard to predict what will happen here due to the giant-killing nature of the Canadian’s run to the Semis here. All things considered, I am going to back Aryna Sabalenka to get the win here. She has been crushing the ball and has dominated all her opponents from the baseline. Fernandez will undoubtedly put up a huge fight but she has spend so much time on court that the mental and physical fatigue is bound to catch up to her. Three sets is a likely outcome, but expect Sabalenka to get the win, and finally advance to her first Grand Slam Final here at the 2021 US Open.
