TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Lloyd Harris (26) meets Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Second Round on Saturday October 9th, 2021.
A hugely exciting match is expected as Lloyd Harris of South Africa and the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina do battle for a spot in the Third Round here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open. Both men have been having strong campaigns this year and will be backing themselves to get the win here. Harris is making his debut at this event while Davidovich Fokina has had one match to acclimatize, will that be the difference here? Who will advance to the Third Round?
Lloyd Harris is currently ranked #31 on the ATP Tour and is the 26th seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open. The big South African has been steadily improving over the past few seasons, and has had some very impressive performances this year. After a fantastic run to the Quarter-Finals at the US Open where he was stopped by Alexander Zverev, he reached the Round of 16 in San Diego, so has some serious momentum on his side. He has one of the best serves on the tour and his groundstrokes have been improving, making him a very difficult opponent on this surface. His first opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is no slouch however, and this is set to be an incredibly difficult opening match for Harris.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is unseeded here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is ranked just behind his opponent Lloyd Harris at #43. The Spaniard is extremely talented but has been having an inconsistent season, and will be hoping to finish the year on a high. He has a very versatile all-around game that translates well to all surfaces, but sometimes can struggle against the big hitters, of which Harris is one. Davidovich Fokina had a rough start to his BNP Paribas Open campaign, but eventually rallied to defeat veteran American Steve Johnson in three tough sets. If he is to advance here he will have to be much improved, as his South African opponent is not likely to let him back into the match if he falls behind. While Davidovich Fokina is the slight underdog, he certainly is capable of getting the win here.
Surprisingly, this is the first meeting between the two players and I am expecting a fantastic battle. Both Lloyd Harris and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina are capable of high-quality tennis, and this match is likely to be filled with some spectacular shot making. I do think that this will go down to the wire, but I have to side with the more consistent person and that is Lloyd Harris. While it can be argued that the Spaniard is more talented, Harris has had a great season (especially on hard courts) and does have a lot more firepower than his opponent. It will be close, but I think that his level head and big serve will be the difference here, and Harris should win here, advancing to the Third Round here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
