TennisSection previews the 2021 Hall of Fame Open Alexander Bublik as takes on Ivo Karlovic in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, July 14th, 2021.
Will Alexander Bublik get some confidence in his game and start to do big things? Will Ivo Karlovic pull off the stunner at the age of 41? This match promises to be an interesting one, as we will see where the level of Bublik is at and whether or not Karlovic has the level to push him at all.
Alexander Bublik has been having a pretty good year by his standards and his usual performances in previous years. He’s been able to consistently win matches and lose to some of the top players, who he has trouble beating. His opponent Ivo Karlovic though, is not in that category. I expect Bublik to have a pretty easy match, although he is one of those players who could just play at an extremely weird level and throw everything away, kind of like Kyrgios. Alexander is playing at a pretty good level on grass, reaching the third round of Wimbledon and losing to eventual semi-finalist Hubert Hurkacz, also recording good results at Eastbourne, losing to eventual finalist Lorenzo Sonego in the quarterfinals. This match seems to be very one way in the favor of Bublik, and he will have to pull out some very out of the ordinary tennis of his if he’s going to lose tomorrow.
Ivo Karlovic has been on the ATP Tour for quite some time now, at the age of 41. The fact that he’s still able to win any matches is an incredible feat. He’s considered to be one of the greatest servers of all time, and while he doesn’t have that same pop as he once did, he can still hold his own on serve, especially on the grass. He will have to try and focus solely on his service games, and trying to get through the tiebreakers, hoping for any faults from Bublik. This is very unlikely, though, and I don’t see him having much of a chance. His first serve percentage today will have to be increased to take out someone of the quality of Bublik, being only 58%. I expect his second serve to be attacked, and some very aggressive tennis from his opponent, he’ll just need to try and not lose serve and hope for the best.
Alexander Bublik and Ivo Karlovic have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Even if they have met before, it probably wouldn’t have mattered much, seeing as how much of a favorite Bublik is, and seeing as this is his match to lose. Karlovic allowed his opponent a look at six break points, saving all of them. For a server like him, 6 is quite a bit, and while he lucked out today, it would be a lot tougher to get through situations like that against Alexander. I expect the match to be relatively straightforward, and while there may be a tiebreaker, I think Bublik will be able to get a good read on Ivo’s serve and go through to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Hall of Fame Open.
