TennisSection previews the 2021 Munich Open as Casper Ruud (2) meets Pablo Cuevas in the Round of 16 on Wednesday April 28th, 2021.
An intriguing matchup awaits us in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Munich Open. Second seeded Casper Ruud of Norway will face unseeded Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas in the Round of 16. Will it be the young star Ruud getting the win? Or can the veteran get the upset and advance to the Quarter-Finals here in Bavaria? Both men are very strong on clay and it is set to be a very tough battle.
Casper Ruud is the number two seed here at the 2021 Munich Open, and is currently ranked #24 in the ATP world rankings. After struggling with injuries at the start of the year, he is now seemingly back to his best with some outstanding results lately. After reaching the Quarter-Finals in Marbella, he followed that up with a brilliant run to the Semi-Finals at the Monte-Carlo Masters, defeating top players such as Diego Schwartzman, Pablo Carreno-Busta and Fabio Fognini in the process. In this current form, he has to be considered a top favorite for the title here at the BMW Open, and will be hoping for a strong start to the tournament. While he is faced with a tough opponent in Pablo Cuevas, the Norwegian is considered the heavy favorite to win here and advance to the Quarter-Finals in Munich.
Pablo Cuevas is currently ranked #85 in the ATP world rankings, and is a former top 20 player. He has seen his ranking decline significantly in recent years, as he approaches the end of his successful career. While he is not the player he once was, he is still a very dangerous opponent, capable of some very strong tennis. The Uruguayan has not played much tennis recently, and this will be his first singles tournament since the Australian Open. Cuevas had an impressive First Round win over Tennys Sandgren in three sets, but that may have taken quite a bit out of him. While he is still a very good player, he is considered the heavy underdog here at the 2021 Munich Open against Casper Ruud, one of the most in-form clay court players at the moment.
This will be the second time that the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head series 1-0. He won in straight sets in their first encounter, in 2019 in Kitzbuhel. I see this match as having only one outcome, and that is a straight-sets win for the Norwegian. His aggressive baseline game is extremely effective on this surface, and moves very well. He is in superb form, and proved that he is one of the best on this surface at the Monte-Carlo Open. While Pablo Cuevas is not to be taken lightly, it is unlikely that he will be able to keep up with the young star, and I see Casper Ruud winning in straight sets, advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Munich Open.
