TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime (2) takes on Andreas Seppi in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021.
Will the experience of Andreas Seppi drag him across the line here as he aims to make a statement with one of the biggest wins of his career in the last few years? Will Felix Auger-Aliassime bring over the amazing form which he has shown for the majority of 2021 to the US as the hard court season has now begun? Both players can win this match if they come out at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Washington Open. Who will it be?
Andreas Seppi came through an extremely tight 3 set comeback victory over Yasutaka Uchiyama, beating the Japanese 3-6/7-5/6-3. Andreas will be very happy that he was able to come back from a set down, especially as he has not really played much recently, and when he has it has been sub-par. However, Andreas Seppi will have to know that if he comes out and does not give it his absolute best from now on here at the 2021 Washington Open, especially as he now meets Felix Auger-Aliassime, he will be packing his bags to the next tournament.
Felix Auger-Aliassime will be looking to bounce back from what was a shocking loss in the first round of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics last week where he lost to Max Purcell in straight sets. Felix was scheduled to meet Andy Murray in the first round, but Murray pulled out a few hours beforehand and Max had to take his spot. This could have potentially hurt Felix’ preparation as he had a game plan for Murray, but either way he should have won. Entering the 2021 Washington Open, Felix will be looking to cruise through Andreas Seppi as he aims to find his form again.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Andreas Seppi have met 1 time before, with Andreas Seppi leading the head to head 1-0. They met earlier this year on clay where Seppi beat him in 4 sets at the French Open. Felix should have really won that match and since the French Open he has raised his level a bit more. Felix is at his best on grass, followed by hard courts, and then on clay, therefore he will know that he can play better than their last meeting. Felix will want to power through this match, finish points quickly, and hurt Andreas in terms of being slower around the court. I still expect a tight match because Felix has some hard court rust on him, but the young Canadian will make his way to the Roudn of 16 of the 2021 Washington Open.
