TennisSection previews the 2023 Charleston Open second-round match featuring Paula Badosa vs Leylah Fernandez on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

Badosa vs Fernandez Match Preview
Paula Badosa faces her first big test at the Charleston Open when she squares off against Leylah Fernandez. Can she make it three wins out of three against the Canadian lefty?
Paula Badosa’s 2023 Charleston Open campaign is off to a great start. She was thoroughly dominant in her 6-3, 6-1 win over unseeded Egyptian Mayar Sherif. This being her first match on clay, you would expect Badosa to have had some jittery moments on serve – a couple to exact – but overall, she will be delighted with her performance. Let’s see if she can maintain her perfect record over Leylah Fernandez in the second round.

Leylah Fernandez, meanwhile, took an hour and 14 minutes to beat Evgeniya Rodina 6-3, 6-2, and booked her spot in the second round of the Charleston Open. Fernandez will be acutely aware she has never advanced beyond this stage at this event and has not beaten Paula Badosa before. So this could be a mountain to climb for the 2021 US Open finalist.

Badosa vs Fernandez Prediction and Pick
Paula Badosa leads Leylah Fernandez 2-0 in their head-to-head. Badosa won both meetings on hard courts and in straight sets. Fernandez has a lot of potential and I’m sure she hasn’t even hit her ceiling yet despite already making a Grand Slam final a couple of seasons ago. She’s in the midst of a stop-start career and she is still figuring out a lot in her game and mentality. Badosa looks to have shaken off her injury concerns and is playing pain-free. Back the Spaniard to preserve her unbeaten record against the Canadian lefty.
