TennisSection previews the 2023 Indian Wells Masters as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 16, 2023.

Carlos Alcaraz could take another step towards reclaiming the No. 1 ranking. But Canada’s finest Felix Auger-Aliassime is not ready to pack his bags just yet after his narrow escape in the fourth round. Who will reach the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters?
Carlos Alcaraz vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime Match Preview
Carlos Alcaraz advanced safely into the quarterfinal of the Indian Wells Masters after his opponent Jack Draper retired with an abdominal injury with the score 6-2 2-0 in favor of the Spaniard. In a battle of two of the brightest prospects in men’s tennis, sadly this match did not live up to their first career meeting in Basel last year. Draper’s health problems resurfaced again and he could not generate sufficient power in his strokes or his serve. Alcaraz is now within three match wins from taking the No. 1 ranking back. Can he topple Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinal?

While Alcaraz punched his ticket to the last eight with minimum fuss, Felix Auger-Aliassime snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. The Canadian called it a ”crazy feeling” after saving an astonishing six match points to defeat USA’s Tommy Paul 3-6 6-3 7-6 in a gripping contest that lasted two hours and 48 minutes. He was 0-40 down on his serve at 5-6 in the third set, but salvaged the situation. And then in the ensuing tiebreak, he came back from 3-6 down to win it 8-6. He set up a meeting against Carlos Alcaraz for a spot in the semifinals.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime Prediction and Pick
Felix Auger-Aliassime leads Carlos Alcaraz 3-0 in their head-to-head. They have played some high-stakes matches including the Davis Cup singles rubber between their countries last year where Auger-Aliassime stunned the then World No. 1 Alcaraz in three sets. A repeat result is not out of question, but with the way Alcaraz has hit his stride of late, he should be the clear favorite despite the lopsided head-to-head record.
