TennisSection previews the 2023 Australian Open as Jiri Lehecka takes on Christopher Eubanks in the Round of 64 on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.
A third-round spot in a Grand Slam beckons for one of Jiri Lehecka and Christopher Eubanks. The Czech scored a fabulous win over 21st seed Borna Coric, while Eubanks was equally impressive in knocking out in-form Soonwoo Kwon. Who will win this second-round match at the Australian Open?
Jiri Lehecka maintained his impressive start to the year as he authored a major upset on Monday, beating 21st seed Borna Coric 6-3 6-3 6-3. Lehecka served exceptionally well, saving six of seven break points he faced, and outhit Coric from the baseline, opening up the court with his efficient forehand and finishing off points with some scintillating winners. He’s earned his spot in the second round of the Australian Open against American one-hander Christopher Eubanks.
Christopher Eubanks, meanwhile, upstaged South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon in the first round of the Australian Open. He won a main draw match Down Under for the first time in his third try. Kwon, who won an ATP title in Adelaide at the weekend, felt the physical toll once the match went down the stretch. But the South Korean No. 1 made Eubanks earn it, with the American coming up with some monstrous first serves (42 aces in the match) to edge him out in five sets.
Jiri Lehecka and Christopher Eubanks have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Wednesday’s match at the Australian Open will be their first official meeting. Kwon did not play badly, but was just overwhelmed by Eubanks’ sheer power and was probably in a celebratory mood after winning Adelaide. I expect Lehecka to make some quality returns. He’s got the ability to conjure up point-ending shots with his backhand, in particular, looking neat. We reckon the young Czech will back up his fine win from Monday.
