TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Serena Williams (7) meets Danielle Collins in the Third Round on Friday June 4th, 2021.
Serena Williams is a legend of the sport, and is seeking to win a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title here at Roland Garros 2021. She has been struggling in recent times but can never be counted out due to her vast experience and is still a very capable player. Can her countrywoman Danielle Collins spoil the party by causing the upset here at the 2021 French Open?
Serena Williams is currently ranked #8 in the WTA world rankings, and is widely considered the greatest female player in history. She is approaching the end of her glittering career, and is desperately searching to equal and then surpass Margaret Court’s Grand Slam singles record. The American star has been in poor form to start the clay court season, and has seemed very shaky in her First and Second Round victories over Irina-Camelia Begu and Mihaela Buzarnescu, and will have to be much improved if she is truly to challenge for the title here at the 2021 French Open. She hit 28 winners but committed a whopping 27 unforced errors, a stat that needs to be drastically reduced. Serena enters this match against Danielle Collins as the favorite, but her fellow American is the best player that she has come up against, and it won’t be easy here.
Danielle Collins is ranked #50 in the world, and has recently returned to the tour after undergoing surgery weeks ago. After surviving a very tough three set battle against Xiyu Wang in the First Round, she rounded back into form with a comprehensive 6-0, 6-2 win over Anhelina Kalinina in the Second Round. Collins needed just over an hour to register the win here at the 2021 French Open, and will have given herself a much needed confidence boost ahead of her Third Round clash against Serena Williams. The American considers hard courts as her favorite surface but is still quite accomplished on clay, having reached the Quarter-Finals here at Roland Garros last year. Due to her lack of match fitness she enters this match as the underdog, but certainly has the tools to cause the upset here at Roland Garros 2021.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour, with Serena leading the head to head series 1-0. This will be an interesting battle here at the 2021 French Open, and I expect it to be a very close affair. Despite Danielle Collins reaching the Quarters here last year, I am backing the legend Serena Williams to get a close victory here at Roland Garros 2021. She has much more experience, and is highly motivated to claim the title here. Collins is very capable of winning here but I think her lack of match practice will be her downfall, and I expect Serena Williams to win here, advancing to the Round of 16.
