TennisSection previews the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals as Sebastian Korda takes on Hugo Gaston in the Round Robin Stage on Tuesday, November 9th, 2021.
Will Hugo Gaston continue using the incredible momentum and confidence he gained just last week at the Paris Masters as he aims to cause an upset? Will Sebastian Korda show us his incredible tennis which has allowed him to rise up the rankings in 2021? Both players have special playing styles which can give them advantages on the court, but only one will win their first match in this round robin format at the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals. Who will it be?
Hugo Gaston played some incredible tennis last week at the 2021 Paris Masters, coming through qualifying by beating Kevin Anderson, and a fellow player here in Milan, Lorenzo Musetti, and then making his way to the Quarter-Finals where he was so close to taking the first set against Medvedev. Hugo has a great playing style, being able to hit the ball in many different ways which prevent his opponents from finding their rhythm. Adding to this, the Frenchman has a great drop shot, perhaps the best in the game, and he reads what his opponents will do next very well. Everything he did in Paris last week allowed him to get this last spot at the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals. However, without the French crowd giving him as much energy as they did last week, will he find it harder to play at his best against Sebastian Korda?
Sebastian Korda has played some great tennis in 2021, winning his maiden ATP Tour title in his first full year on tour. Korda, same as Gaston, met Daniil Medvedev last week in Paris, but unlike the Frenchman, Korda was able to win a set against the Russian. Sebastian’s game is very well suited to indoor hard court conditions, as he is able to hit the ball very fast, flat, and he has a big serve. One thing the American is going to need to be wary about in this match against Hugo Gaston at the 2021 Nitto ATP Finals, is the fact that his movement is going to be constantly under pressure with the Frenchman’s change of speed, spin, and dropshot insertions in the game.
Sebastian Korda and Hugo Gaston have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. When comparing their weeks last week in Paris, the difference is really marginal. However, one big thing which gave Gaston that ability to make the Quarter-Finals was the French crowd and the amount of pressure they put on Non-French opponents. Here in Milan, this is not going to be as potent for Gaston. The better player out of the two is for sure Sebastian Korda on a week in and week out basis, but Gaston might still have some momentum left. I expect a tight one here at the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals, but one where the American comes through victorious.
