TennisSection previews the 2021 St Petersburg Open as Denis Shapovalov takes on Jan-Lennard Struff in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, October 29th, 2021.
Will Denis Shapovalov get the win? Will Jan-Lennard Struff pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have one of the top dogs taking on a tough test. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2021 St Petersburg Open?
Denis Shapovalov got a solid win to set up this meeting with a very tough opponent in Jan-Lennard Struff. Shapovalov got through in 3 over Andujar after dropping the firSt He dominated the next 2 sets, taking them 6-2 6-0. He put on a highlight reel of shots, hitting winner after winner, filling the court with power. He should be able to get through this one without too much trouble, as this is a quick court and Struff hasn’t been playing that well this year. If Shapovalov can just maintain his level from his first match, then I expect him to continue his campaign here at the 2021 St Petersburg Open in brutal fashion.
Jan-Lennard Struff got a solid win over a struggling Bublik to set up a tough meeting with no. 2 seed Denis Shapovalov. In order to take him out, he will have to try and be aggressive on second serve returns, Shapovalov is a very inconsistent server, so if Struff can build pressure on occasion, Shapovalov may very well do the rest of the work for him. Still, Shapovalov is a top player in the world for a reason, and I do expect him to do what he did against Andujar, just using brutal power and hitting corners, trying to be as aggressive as possible as he looks for a spot in the semifinals at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Denis Shapovalov and Jan-Lennard Struff have met six times before, with Jan-Lennard Struff leading the head to head 4-2. It’s an interesting matchup, with Struff winning 4 meetings in a row from 2019-2020. Shapovalov took the first and the most recent. He won their match in Dubai 6-1 6-3, when he was playing incredible. Dubai is a quick court, and Shapovalov is simply in much better form, so even if Struff is a bad matchup for him, I expect Shapovalov to tough it out. Struff likely will push him, with Shapovalov eventually clinching the match in a tough 3 sets as the two fight for a spot in the final eight at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
