TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Iga Swiatek (7) meets Irina-Camelia Begu in the Third Round on Friday July 2nd, 2021.
Seventh seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland has established herself as a fast-rising star of the WTA Tour. The young Pole has had success on both clay and hard courts, but is yet to conquer the grass surface. She has looked good so far here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and will be confident in going deep into the draw here. Next up in her way is the veteran Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu, who has also been solid. Who will get the win and advance to the Round of 16 here at Wimbledon?
Iga Swiatek is currently ranked ninth on the WTA Tour and is the seventh seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. She is considered one of the most talented and exciting young players to emerge in recent years, and backed those claims up when she won her first Grand Slam last year as a teenager. She is very inexperienced on grass but she has played well so far, displaying her vast talent and adaptability. Swiatek is yet to lose a set so far here at Wimbledon, defeating Hsieh and Vera Zvonareva comfortably to reach this stage. The youngster has already surpassed her career-best here at this event and is the big favorite to advance to the Round of 16 here over opponent Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania.
Irina-Camelia Begu is unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, and is ranked #79 on the WTA Tour. The Romanian is a seasoned campaigner and has equaled her career-best result here by reaching the Third Round. The former top 25 player has had a tough road to this point but has showed tremendous resilience to defeat Katie Volynets and her upset win over 26th seed Petra Martic. Begu is a very solid baseline player and has the game for this surface but does not move as well as she once did. She has enjoyed a good run here but is facing a whole different caliber of player here in Iga Swiatek, and she is the massive underdog here.
This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour, and it is a relatively easy one to predict. While Irina-Camelia Begu is a former world #22, she has been outside the top 50 for over three years, and has seen a slow decline in her abilities. On the other side, Iga Swiatek is a fast rising young superstar who will win another Grand Slam sooner rather than later. I expect the veteran to put up a fight, but she will fall short here as Swiatek advances to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
