TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Novak Djokovic (1) meets Tennys Sandgren in the Round of 128 on Tuesday, June 1st 2021.
Will Tennys Sandgren shock everyone and knock out the top seed here at Roland Garros and put this draw into a shock? Will Novak Djokovic come out here ready to get his campaign under way in easy fashion by dominating? Novak Djokovic will be looking to continue improving his tennis to ensure he has the best chance of winning his 19th Grand Slam, but he needs to make sure he is ready to put in the early work against the likes of Tennys Sandgren.
Tennys Sandgren has not been in good form recently, losing early last week in Belgrade in the first round against Jeremy Chardy in straight sets 4-6/2-6. Tennys is more of a hard-court player who sometimes puts on some strong performances in big tournaments, as he did at the 2020 Australian Open where he nearly beat Roger Federer. However, since then, Tennys Sandgren has just been really bad on the ATP Tour, losing in the first couple rounds of every tournament he participates in. Tennys will be very unhappy with his draw here at Roland Garros as he meets Novak Djokovic right away and he will have to cause the most shocking upset of the Round of 128.
Novak Djokovic has been improving his clay court game recently in Belgrade, winning the title on home soil, as he was looking to get his game up to speed for the 2021 French Open. Novak Djokovic has had a tough time on clay this year, losing in early rounds of some tournaments shockingly, but recently he has been improving, being able to reach the Final of the Rome Open and also win in Belgrade last week. Novak Djokovic will know that his best tennis needs to come out faster than usual here at Roland Garros as both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are in this side of the draw, so his best level needs to come before he potentially makes the Final.
Novak Djokovic and Tennys Sandgren have met 3 times before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 3-0. They last met at the Cincinatti Masters in 2020 where Djokovic won 6-2/6-4. Novak Djokovic has only ever lost 1 set to Tennys Sandgren in all of their meetings, and unfortunately for the American, I do not see him getting any more sets under his belt here. This is serious preparation for Novak to get his best level out here at Roland Garros, and he will not let himself waste precious energy on a much lower ranked opponent like Sandgren. Novak will use all of his tricks and dropshots to get this one done quickly.
