TennisSection previews the 2023 Auckland Open as Cameron Norrie takes on Marcos Giron in the quarterfinal on Thursday, January 12, 2023.

Cameron Norrie was tested by Jiri Lehecka but eventually passed with flying colors. Will the Briton go all the way this week at the Auckland Open? He still has some potential banana skins to peel between now and Saturday, starting with a tricky quarterfinal against Marco Giron.
Cameron Norrie overcame Jiri Lehecka in three sets, in a match that was halted due to rain delays but eventually finished on an indoor hard court. It has been a chaotic couple of weeks for the tournament organizers at the Auckland Open, who are having a headache showcasing the only top-tier tournament to be held in New Zealand to the fans. And right now, it is tough to imagine any of the day’s matches being completed outdoors.

Marcos Giron, meanwhile, is into his first quarterfinal of the season after getting the better of fellow American J.J. Wolf. Giron, who was on the ropes for most of his opening match against Federico Coria, defended well against an error-prone Wolf who had stunned Adrian Mannarino in the previous round. He won 6-4 6-4, registering 84% first-serve points won, and did not drop a single service game in the match. Next up for him is the second seed Cameron Norrie.
Cameron Norrie and Marcos Giron are tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head. Giron won their last meeting at the Vienna Open last year in straight sets. So if this quarterfinal clash at the Auckland Open ends up being played under the roof, the American could have the upper hand. We know Norrie just likes that little bit of time to set himself and unleash his topspin forehand. But he won’t be getting that luxury playing indoors. Still, we think the British lefty has too much nous and craft to withstand an aggressive Giron in three sets.
