TennisSection previews the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as Stefanos Tsitsipas (4) meets Daniel Evans in the Semi-finals on Saturday, April 17th 2021.
Will Daniel Evans be able to make it a clean sweep of upsets here in Monte-Carlo as he looks to cause a 4thupset in a row to book his spot in the Final of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters? Will Stefanos Tsitsipas make his way to his second Masters 1000 Final of his career to book a spot and perhaps finally get a big title (other than the ATP Finals) under his belt? Both players have been great all week, and both deserve to be in the Final, but only one will. Who will it be?
Daniel Evans just can’t stop winning it seems in recent times, having won the Doubles Miami Masters title just a couple weeks ago, and now in the Semi-finals of the Singles in Monte-Carlo, having beaten the likes of Novak Djokovic and David Goffin along the way. In the Quarter-finals, Evans beat David Goffin in 3 extremely tight sets 5-7/6-3/6-4, saving 15 break points along the way which would have most likely resulted in him losing the match! Daniel Evans will want to keep this high level of tennis going, but he will also be very happy with how far he has reached on a surface where he had never had some success on in the ATP Tour. How will Evans now deal with his second toughest challenge this week in Stefanos Tsitsipas?
Stefanos Tsitsipas had a very easy ride in his Quarter-final encounter, winning the first set against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-5 before Fokina had to retire due to injury. Tsitsipas, although he has had it easy, has more been handed the match by his opponents this week, than earnt them. Stefanos is filled with talent and he definitely will know that he can raise his level even more if he puts it all on the line here. Stefanos has reached a Masters 1000 Final before, at the 2019 Madrid Masters where he beat the likes of Rafael Nadal on his way to the Final, which he lost to Novak Djokovic. However, Tsitsipas will have to make sure he is in great form here if he is to beat the very in form Daniel Evans here.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniel Evans have met 2 times before on the ATP Tour, both times in 2020, with Tsitsipas leading the head to head 2-0. The last time they met was on the clay-courts of the 2020 Hamburg Open in the Second Round. Tsitsipas won that one in straight sets 6-3/6-1 and cruised through the tournament to reach the Final. Although Daniel Evans has been in great form all week here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, getting the biggest victory of his career under his belt, I still do not believe he will beat a very experienced Stefanos Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas loves these conditions and he will be very determined to make his second Masters 1000 Final of his career, potentially meeting the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal.
