Adelaide International 2023: Daniil Medvedev vs. Lorenzo Sonego Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2023 Adelaide International as Daniil Medvedev takes on Lorenzo Sonego in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

Daniil Medvedev kicks off his 2023 season at the Adelaide International where he is set to make his debut appearance at the ATP 250 event. Australia has not been kind as far as titles go, having lost two Australian Open finals. Will he get the perfect preparation for another crack at Melbourne Park? His task is somewhat tricky this week, starting with big-hitting Lorenzo Sonego right off the bat. Who will prevail?

Daniil Medvedev used his Adelaide International pre-tournament presser to express his disappointment of missing out on competing at the inaugural United Cup. Russia received the latest ban due to the current tension and invasion of Ukraine, and now its athletes contain to pay the price. Medvedev says he would have preferred playing in the team event which would have raised his spirits heading to Melbourne. But nonetheless, he will still be motivated to get his season off to a good start on Tuesday as he takes on the dangerous Italian Lorenzo Sonego.

Lorenzo Sonego, meanwhile, will be looking to replicate his good start during the Australian swing last year where he made the quarterfinals of Syndey and went on to reach the Australian Open third round. So it is imperative for the Italian World No. 45 to start positively to enjoy a productive summer on Australian soil. Sonego won a third career title on the indoor hard courts of Metz last autumn and re-entered the world’s top 50 before the year’s end. He is also set to partake at the Adelaide International for the first time when he lines up to face Daniil Medvedev.

Daniil Medvedev and Lorenzo Sonego have not played each on the ATP Tour. Tuesday’s match at the Adelaide International will be their first official meeting. Medvedev will the firm favorite regardless of where his motivation is at, having expressed his disappointment in not playing in the United Cup. On paper, Sonego represents a very good test for the two-time Australian Open finalist and I expect to have too much nous for the Italian.
