Not many players are capable of stopping Holger Rune on current form. But France’s Ugo Humbert certainly possesses the poise and penetrating shots that could halt the Danish youngster’s streak at the Basel Open. So who will prevail when the pair lock horns in a popcorn second-round match?

Holger Rune is a man on a mission this autumn. As the ATP regular season draws to a close in the next fortnight, Rune is determined to leave an indelible mark. Already the Dane is showcasing his talent on a consistent basis, having captured his second ATP title last week in Stockholm. In fact, since the resumption of the indoor hard court season this autumn, Rune has only lost two matches. And his opponent has either made the final (Bublik in Metz) or won the tournament (Huesler in Sofia)in those defeats. So it does gives us a telling reminder that the young Dane is indeed a force to be reckoned with. His Basel Open campaign got off to winning start as he defeated Alex De Minaur for the second week in a row.

Ugo Humbert, for his part, is painstakingly working to return to the world’s top 100 before the season end. Humbert endured a terrible first half of the campaign with a bunch of first-round exits. He has since dropped down the Challenger level to restore his confidence and get his ranking moving in the right direction. Humbert has ticked both boxes and made light work of Jenson Brooksby in his opening match at the Basel Open.

Holger Rune leads Ugo Humbert 1-0 in their head-to-head. That meeting took place at Indian Wells earlier during the year where Rune won in straight sets. The Danish Next Gen star is playing the finest tennis of his young career and you can only imagine he will blossom into an even bigger talent in the coming season. Humbert has done fantastically to salvage his 2022 season now that his return to the top 100 is imminent. But expect the new World No. 25 to record another empathic win at the Basel Open.
