TennisSection previews the 2022 Basel Open as Alex De Minaur takes on Holger Rune in the first round on Wednesday, October 26th, 2022.

It is a rematch of the Stockholm semifinal as Alex De Minaureyes revenge when he takes on Holger Rune in a popcorn first-rounder at the Basel Open. Who will come out on top?
Alex De Minaur will look back on his Stockholm semifinal defeat against Holger Rune and wonder how the match slipped from his grasp. The Aussie led by a set and break but still could not close it out against the Danish Next Gen star who rose to the occasion and played superb tennis in Sweden’s capital. Not even Stefanos Tsitsipas had an answer to Rune’s near-perfect baseline game. De Minaur will need to figure out a way very quickly and redeem himself when he locks horns against Rune for the second time in as many days at the Basel Open.

A day after beating De Minaur in three sets, Holger Rune went on and upset the 2019 champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in the final. 2022 has been a standout year for Rune who has already notched three top 5 wins and bagged the second of his two titles in Stockholm at the weekend. With two days of sufficient rest time, the Dane will be looking to extend his dominance at the Basel Open in what will be his main draw debut.
Holger Rune leads Alex De Minaur 1-0 in their head-to-head. That meeting took place last weekend when Rune stunned De Minaur in three sets in Stockholm. He used that result as a blueprint to even greater success in the final. Right now, Rune is not putting a foot wrong and is one of very few players with double digit match wins on indoor hard courts. The danger though is that he has the tendency of getting complacent immediately after a good run, which is why I think the bookies might be right in this one to instill De Minaur as the slight favorite.
