TennisSection previews the 2022 US Open as Jack Draper takes on Karen Khachanov in the third round on Friday, September 2nd, 2022.
It has been a good start to the US Open campaign for British players. One of those making waves in New York is Sutton’s Jack Draper who is into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time. Draper will attempt to break new barriers when he takes on the experienced Karen Khachanov for a spot in the fourth round. Who will prevail?
Not many people gave Jack Draper a chance to make an imprint at this year’s US Open. And particularly after being drawn in a tough quarter featuring the sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 20-year-old Londoner tore the pre-tournament script apart and defeated both Emil Ruusuori and Auger-Aliassime without dropping a set. The manner of his sizzling performance in a 6-4 6-4 6-4 win over the Canadian will send shockwaves across the tournament this fortnight. Draper did not drop serve all match and nullified the three break points he faced with aplomb. He is guaranteed to break the world’s top 50 for the first time regardless of his result in the third round.
Karen Khachanov, meanwhile, is into the third round of the US Open for the third time in his career, thanks to his second straight four-set win over Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro. Khachanovhas certainly made amends for his horror show from last year’s edition when he was bundled out at the first hurdle by Lloyd Harris. He has improved his overall consistency from the baseline, hammering 45 winners against Monteiro and winning 82% first-serve points.
Jack Draper and Karen Khachanov have not faced off at any level before this. Friday’s third-round match at the US Open will be their first official meeting. From the moment he beat Ruusuvuori, it was clear Draper would take some stopping at this tournament. His uncanny and aggressive ball striking overwhelmed Auger-Aliassime. Not many players can manufacture double-digit break points against the Canadian powerhouse in the way the Briton did. I think that match was the perfect prep for him to face another big hitter like Khachanov. Expect the 20-year-old Londoner to prevail on Friday.
