TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Aslan Karatsev takes on Jenson Brooksby in the Round of 32 on Saturday, September 4th, 2021.
Will the up and coming American, Jenson Brooksby, continue to get far as he aims to get another big win under his belt and get himself in the second week of his maiden Grand Slam? Will Aslan Karatsev be able to use the momentum from that great comeback to get far here at the US Open in hopes to go nearly as far as he did at the Australian Open? Both players are great and can win this match on merit, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 US Open. Who will it be?
Jenson Brooksby got a very big win under his belt beating his much more experienced and higher ranked American, Taylor Fritz, in 4 sets 6-7/7-6/7-5/6-2. The match was very tight throughout and both players had chances to go ahead. However, Jenson was able to use the momentum he gained over the last month to ensure he had the confidence in himself to back his shots. Taylor should have won in my opinion, but he did not, and now Jenson will have to raise his level even more if he is to come through a tough Aslan Karatsev here at the 2021 US Open.
Aslan Karatsev put on a great comeback performance in the Round of 64, coming back from 2 sets down against Jordan Thompson to win in 5 sets 3-6/3-6/7-5/7-6/6-1. Aslan was on the ropes for many moments during the match, but the longer the match went, the more he was able to continue playing and the stamina of Jordan Thompson was not there. Aslan will know he was so close to losing here and he should not allow himself to be as passive in the first few sets of a match, especially as he now meets a future star in Jenson Brooksby here at the 2021 US Open.
Aslan Karatsev and Jenson Brooksby have met 1 time before, with Aslan Karatsev leading the head to head 1-0. They met earlier this year at the French Open where Karatsev dominated in straight sets. Since then, Jenson has raised his level and become a much tougher player to beat. Aslan has been up and down since then and he is aiming to find his best form recently. Both of them can compete here and keep things close, but I think the momentum of Aslan’s comeback will allow him to come out here and get a good win under his belt. Jenson will keep it tight and will most likely steal a set, but Aslan has more power in my opinion and more belief in himself as he makes his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 US Open.
