US Open champion Daniil Medvedev makes his return to the ATP Tour here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and has continued his scintillating form, winning both of his matches in straight sets. The Russian superstar is the favorite to win this event due to Novak Djokovic pulling out and will be eager to capture his first Masters-1000 title of the year. He will face the highly experienced Grigor Dimitrov who has also started strongly here, advancing to the Round of 16 with relative ease. Can he win his biggest match of the year and upset the first time Grand Slam champion?
Daniil Medvedev is the world number two and is the top seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open. The tall Russian has been in sublime form this year, and his season reached it’s peak a few weeks ago in New York, where he won his first Grand Slam title. He is the massive favorite here and has started in devastating form, defeating Mackenzie McDonald and Filip Krajinovic easily, setting up this Round of 16 clash against Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian is in good form but is not quite the player that he used to be, and he is not expected to put up too much resistance.
Grigor Dimitrov is the 23rd seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is ranked #28 in the world. The former top 5 player has struggled over the past few years but is seemingly back to his best now, and like his opponent Daniil Medvedev he has reached this stage without dropping a set. He was outstanding in his Third Round win over the dangerous Reilly Opelka, returning extremely well to nullify the American’s biggest weapons. He is the big underdog here and despite his solid form, he will have to summon every ounce of his experience to make this match interesting.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with Medvedev leading the head to head 3-1. Grigor Dimitrov won the pair’s first encounter back in 2017 but has not since won a set throughout three matches, including a 6-3, 6-3 win in Cincinnati earlier this year. While Dimitrov is a solid player, this match will be one way traffic and I see the top seed getting a comfortable victory here, using his defense and penetrating, flat groundstrokes to take charge of the match from the baseline. The Bulgarian will put up a fight but will ultimately lose in straight sets here, and his opponent will march on into the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
