Will Casper Ruud get the win? Will Marin Cilic pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have now undoubtedly one of the guys to beat on the clay taking on an already well established grand slam player making his return. Who will triumph and move on to the final at the 2022 French Open?
Casper Ruud played an exciting match against the young Holger Rune, withstanding drama and other adverse conditions to take him down in 4 sets over 3 hours and move through to the semifinals of a major for the very first time in his career. Marin Cilic will be a tough opponent with his massive hitting and serving, but Ruud has something Cilic’s opponents haven’t yet had very much of, defense. Ruud is a brilliant clay courter, he knows how to rip his forehand heavy, perfect for the conditions here, but he’s also incredibly quick and doesn’t allow his opponents to jump all over him. I think it’ll surprise Cilic and it’s not gonna be an easy match for him as the two clash for a spot in their very first Roland Garros final at the 2022 French Open.
Marin Cilic took down Andrey Rublev in a 5 set battle, entering god-mode for the 5th set tiebreaker. To take down Casper Ruud will be his greatest test yet. I think it’s gonna be a battle, and it won’t be easy for either player, but for Cilic, he needs to continue to serve well, if he can do this and continue the aggression off some of Ruud’s weaker serves, he can win. Ruud however, will be defending well from the baseline, and really being able to use his forehand to dictate Cilic, which we haven’t seen anyone be able to do yet. Let’s see what the Croatian can do as he aims to reach the final here to have been able to reach the final of all four majors, something that’s within his grasp here at the 2022 French Open.
Casper Ruud and Marin Cilic have met twice before, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 2-0. One meeting came on the clay in 2020, and another in Canada last season. Although it does show that Ruud could be a good player to counter the aggression of Cilic, I think we can mostly throw those matches out the door. It’s going to be a match of aggression, Ruud knows that and he’s gonna bring it as is Cilic, obviously. Ruud is a physical player, I think he’s going to be able to wear down the Croatian superstar and continue his incredible run. He will assert himself as one of the very best on the ATP Tour as he seeks to book a clash in his maiden grand slam final at the 2022 French Open.
