TennisSection previews the 2022 French Open as Andrey Rublev takes on Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, June 1st, 2022.
Will Andrey Rublev get the win? Will Marin Cilic pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have an unexpected quarterfinal, but one to behold as two of the biggest hitters on the ATP Tour clash. Who will triumph and move on to the semifinals at the 2022 French Open?
Andrey Rublev took down Jannik Sinner, although not without some help. He dropped the 1st set quickly, then raced to a good finish in the 2nd set, but not before Sinner started showing problems with his knee. Sinner then retired after falling down 2-0 in the 3rd set. Rublev didn’t play badly, and he is looking fresh. He’s the favorite to get to his first major semifinal coming up against Marin Cilic. And if Rublev manages to get through here, then we are guaranteed to see a brand new grand slam finalist coming from the bottom half at the 2022 French Open.
Marin Cilic has had quite the career, winning the US Open and making the final of the other 2 majors, with the 4th one being this tournament, the one he’s missing. Andrey Rublev will be a tough match, Rublev is a stronger clay courter from what we’ve seen in the last few years, but Cilic is coming off an incredible performance over the World No. 2 in the 4th round. If he can keep that level up, he may very well be poised to move on to the semifinals of the 2022 French Open.
Andrey Rublev and Marin Cilic have met 6 times before, with Andrey Rublev leading the head to head 4-2. Their first meeting came on the clay, but it was in 2015, easily discountable. From 2019-2021, Rublev won 4 straight meetings, but lost in the Australian Open in 4 sets to Cilic this year. I think especially on the clay, Rublev is the favorite and is quite underrated on the surface. He’s been grinding really well for the clay, but also mixing in some aggression quite well. It may not be easy, but I expect Rublev to get through and make his very first grand slam final coming on the red clay here at the 2022 French Open.
